ABOUT ME

Alan Highton has to be the man walking this earth that has seen the most lightning. His passion for nature that he truly got to experience through the Catatumbo are clearly showing in all of his work, especially in his remarkable nature photography. He‘s an amazing guy and never ceases to amaze me with everything he knows about the wildlife, the people and the amazing Catatumbo Lightning.

Alan Highton, born and raised on Barbados, has been a tour guide and expedition leader since 1986. What started as a love story with his Venezuelan wife, Ingrid, led Alan to the most spectacular jungles, flooded forests, plains and mountains of Venezuela, and he became one of the most recognised tour operators, and nature guides of that continent, earning high recommendations in travel guides such as the Lonely Planet. His experience and reputation has led to participation in countless TV shows, podcasts, blogs, and written publications, including National Geographic, BBC, NHK Japan, ABC, and The Weather Channel, just to mention a few.
I have had the pleasure to travel with Alan, and the privilege of describing two of the butterflies that he discovered, new for science. Alan pioneered expeditions into the Catatumbo Delta, the lightning capital of the world. After more than 500 trips to that extraordinary place, it is unlikely that any one person has observed, or photographed, more lightning than he has.
It is sad that so many have left Venezuela, including Alan, but now he has returned to his roots. Back on Barbados, Alan has specialised in surf photography. Being a surfer, and an experienced wildlife photographer, makes the perfect combination! 36 years of experience as a tour guide also makes him the man to show you the beautiful Barbados he grew up on.
I truly envy the life he has lived, and highly recommend him as a guide and photographer.
I wish Alan all the best!
